Understanding the Full Armor of God
Introduction
Welcome to Grace Haven Christian Church! Today, we delve into a powerful and essential topic for every believer: the Full Armor of God. This lesson is based on Ephesians 6:10-18, with a focus on verse 11, which encourages us to "put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." Let's explore each piece of this spiritual armor and understand how to apply it in our daily lives.
What is the Full Armor of God?
The Belt of Truth
Ephesians 6:14 introduces the Belt of Truth. In a world filled with uncertainty and deception, the truth of God's Word stands firm. Facts may present a grim reality, but the truth is that God is sovereign and in control. Walking in this truth means letting it guide our thoughts, words, and actions daily.
The Breastplate of Righteousness
Also in verse 14, we find the Breastplate of Righteousness. Outside of Jesus, there is no righteousness. Through Him, we are made righteous, and our daily decisions should reflect this. Righteousness isn't just a Sunday affair; it’s a lifestyle that involves making godly choices consistently.
The Shoes of Peace
Verse 15 speaks of the Shoes of Peace, which ground us in the good news of Jesus Christ. These shoes protect us and provide stability. As we walk in peace, our actions should lead others to Christ, reflecting the gospel in everything we do.
The Shield of Faith
In verse 16, we are instructed to take up the Shield of Faith. This shield is not just a small piece of armor; it’s large enough to protect our entire body. It quenches the fiery darts of the enemy, symbolizing our victory and resilience. Holding up this shield means we haven't given up; we are still in the fight, trusting in God's promises.
The Helmet of Salvation
Verse 17 introduces the Helmet of Salvation. This piece of armor protects our minds, reminding us of our salvation and the hope we have in Christ. It guards our thoughts against doubt and fear, keeping us focused on our eternal security.
The Sword of the Spirit
Also in verse 17, we find the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Unlike the other pieces of armor, this is our offensive weapon. Knowing and memorizing scripture is crucial because it is the Word that makes the enemy retreat. Jesus used scripture to counter the devil's temptations, and we must do the same.
Praying in the Spirit
Verse 18 emphasizes the importance of prayer. Praying in the Spirit connects us with God, guiding and empowering us. It is through prayer that we receive strength and direction to wield our spiritual armor effectively.
Life Application
Applying the Armor Daily
Putting on the Full Armor of God is not a passive act. It requires intentionality and daily commitment. Here are some practical steps:
Daily Prayer: Incorporate each piece of armor into your daily prayers. For example, "Lord, as I put on the Shoes of Peace, help me to walk firmly in Your gospel."
Scripture Memorization: Make it a habit to memorize scripture. Start with key verses like Ephesians 6:11 and build from there.
Righteous Living: Make conscious decisions that reflect your righteousness in Christ. This includes your thoughts, words, and actions.
Faith in Action: Hold up your Shield of Faith by trusting in God's promises, especially during trials.
Mind Protection: Guard your thoughts with the Helmet of Salvation, focusing on your hope in Christ.
Use the Word: Study and use the Word of God as your weapon against spiritual attacks.
Questions for Reflection
Truth: Are you allowing the truth of God's Word to guide your daily decisions?
Righteousness: How can you make more righteous choices in your everyday life?
Peace: Is your walk reflecting the peace and stability of the gospel?
Faith: Are you holding up your Shield of Faith during difficult times?
Salvation: How often do you remind yourself of the hope and security you have in Christ?
Word of God: Are you actively studying and memorizing scripture to use in spiritual battles?
Conclusion
The Full Armor of God equips us to stand firm against the enemy's tactics. By intentionally putting on each piece of armor daily, we can live victorious lives in Christ. This week, challenge yourself to incorporate these practices into your routine. Reflect on the questions provided and seek to deepen your understanding and application of God's Word.
May God bless you as you walk in His truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and Word. In Jesus Name, Amen.
